Bolster Pillow

Bolster Pillows

Almost everyone equates restful sleep with laying one’s head on a soft, plump bolster pillow. But few are aware of the history of the bolster pillow. The basic form and makeup of pillows – bolsters being one of the most common shapes – have changed little over time.
The name “bolster pillow” comes from the Germans. It indicates a long, cylindrical throw of varying length, stuffed with anything from straw to the modern-day fiber.
The bolster pillow can be traced back to Mesopotamia, and is found extensively throughout ancient Egyptian history, when the head was believed to be the most sacred part of the body. Considered to be the seat of life, bolster pillows took on various forms, sizes, and plush designs or decorations in their preparation for the job of housing the head and supporting the neck.  Originally used by the wealthy, the bolster pillow has even been found in ancient Egyptian tombs.

Bolsters were used for comfort in the Far East. Originally known as the “bamboo wife,” women made the bolster of bamboo for their husbands to bring with them when they traveled so they would not feel alone when they slept away from their wives.

The Chinese, believing soft pillows could rob a person of energy and vitality, created their bolster pillows from hard materials – perhaps leather in one season and ceramic in another. Chinese children were encouraged to sleep with bolster pillows the way inhabitants of most Western countries would use a body pillow. These were softer versions of the bolster on which one could rest one’s head at the top end and hug or snuggle up to the rest of it. Bolster users often continued this habit into adulthood.

Many hotels used to provide bolster pillows for the comfort of their guests. This was particularly true in places with warm climates where blankets were unnecessary. It was thought that one could hug the bolster to avoid catching a cold or to help cool down naturally where there was no air conditioning.
Throughout Europe pillows were leaned against the bolster, which spanned the width of the bed across the top and placed against the headboard. This arrangement allowed the head and neck to lie in a more comfortable position. As simple as the bolster pillow is, it is believed to have medical benefits. Bolster pillows are particularly beneficial for people who have shoulder, hip, or back problems.

Bolsters provide support for the head and neck as well as the knees and legs, especially for those who usually sleep on their sides. One can adjust the bolster to create more comfort for restful sleep. Bolsters are great for pregnant women, and can also help support babies when they nurse, freeing up the mother’s arms. They can also be used to keep small babies safe while they are lying on furniture not designed to keep them in.
The basic concept of the bolster is still popular today. The bolster as a body pillow will probably never go out of style, and for decorating, it can be made long or short to fit almost any piece of furniture. The bolster can add a luxurious look or provide a pop of color in an otherwise bland room. Bolsters can add to a design theme in a subtle but elegant way.

Tips on Buying TVs

Tips on Buying TVs

There are so many TVs out there these days, what is the best one to get? Here's some information to help you out.

Types
You can get the following types of TVs:
LED - You can find these in all price points, therefore, they are the most common. A great TV with the right specs.

Plasma - These were the first flat screens and the technology is starting to become obsolete.

OLED - The way of the future. These produce the best colors and picture, however, they are pricey.

What to look for
Here are the specs to take note of when looking for your new TV:

Refresh Rate - This is measured in Hz and the higher the number the better. Example: as 240 Hz is better than a 120 Hz

Response Time - You want the smallest amount of time. Anything with a 2 ms response time and less is best.

Resolution - You really need to get a 1080p at minimum. The higher the number the better.

Screen Size - This is the diagonal measurement of the screen. When deciding on what size to buy, measure the area you plan to put the TV first. Make sure to check actual dimensions of the TV which will include the case.
Contrast - 10,000 to 1 is common on most TVs.

Viewing Angle - This determines how far away from the center of the TV that a person can view it.

Extras
You may want to look into the following items:

Mounting Brackets - These allow for the TV to be hung from the wall.

Home Theater System - The speakers in the TVs are not usually the best. This will allow you to enjoy your TV better.

Thread Count in Bed Sheets ?

You will see thread count referred to with a number followed by tc, which stands for thread count, such as 200tc. Thread Count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. So if a fabric is 200tc or 200 thread count, that means there were 200 threads per one square inch of fabric.

Thread count in bed sheets can range from 60 to 800. The most often purchased sheets are sheets that range from 180 to 350 thread count. Basically, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets feel. Keep in mind, the higher the thread count, the more expensive the sheets are as well.

However, higher thread count does not necessarily mean the sheets will last longer. In fact, thread counts above 380 are kind of deceiving. Many manufacturers twist two threads in a way that lets them double the sheets thread count. That does not make them last longer though.

Although many linen manufacturers say thread count is the best way to choose sheets, others point out that the quality of the fibers and finish are more important to the sheets comforter and durablility. In fact, sheets made of linen, flannel, or jersey (those t shirt sheets) have low thread counts due to the type of fabric. A high thread count would eliminate part of the appeal of these sheets.

According to Consumer Reports Magazine, cotton and cotton blend sheets with a thread count of 180 to 200 stand up to wear and tear the best and provide satisfactory comfort. It has been my personal experience that 200 to 350 thread count feels the best and lasts the longest. Sheets under 180 thread count tend to pile with wear and become scratchy to the skin.

So in the end it comes down to what feels good to you, and what is in your price range. If you buy sheets in the 200-250 thread count range, you will get the most life out of them, and they are comfortable.
